Spencer Aspleaf

Spencer Aspleaf

| Hyde Park Men’s Haus Director of Operations - Harmony Haus

Spencer, hailing from the heart of Iowa, embarked on a journey filled with both struggles and triumphs. Growing up in a typical Midwestern town, Spencer discovered a passion for music at the age of 12, while also encountering the challenges of adolescence, including experimentation with substances like weed.

At just 14, Spencer had his first brush with drug-related issues, resulting in an outpatient treatment program due to an incident involving weed at school. Initially, Spencer didn’t take it seriously, but it marked the beginning of a tumultuous relationship with substances. Soon, experiences with Molly, Salvia, and mushrooms entered the picture, and by the age of 16, an accident involving a table saw left Spencer with permanent damage to their left hand, leading to a dependence on painkillers following multiple surgeries.

Recognizing the need for help, Spencer bravely approached their parents at 18 and embarked on a 30-day recovery program in Keystone, South Dakota, with a focus on 12-step recovery and behavior modification. However, two days before completing the program, Spencer chose to leave. Nevertheless, a period of 90 days of sobriety followed, though weed and alcohol use eventually crept back into their life, excluding the painkillers.

At 20, a DUI marked another turning point, leading to an outpatient program and ultimately a move to Denver, Colorado, where Spencer engaged in the local music scene, frequently performing at open mics and participating in various projects. Drugs and alcohol, unfortunately, disrupted these opportunities.

Returning home to be with their ailing mother, Spencer joined forces with cousins to form a band, but the allure of substances proved too strong, undermining the band’s potential. Eventually, Spencer ventured into solo acoustic performances before joining a top 40 country band, touring extensively across the Midwest.

After two years, Spencer decided to part ways with the band, facing a battle with mental health issues and severe depression. This period included multiple suicide attempts, leading to a life-changing moment when Spencer sought help and found a lifeline through a Music Cares scholarship, which provided access to detox and recovery programs in Florida.

Transferring to Austin and joining Urban Harmony Haus, Spencer, began an inspiring journey to recovery and sobriety, which led them to become an assistant manager for sober living houses. Learning the art of accountability out of love and embracing a healthier lifestyle, Spencer became an instrumental part of the recovery community, eventually taking over the management of Hyde Park Haus.

Additionally, Spencer started working at BRC Recovery as an RCA, devoting their life to recovery and helping others on their journey. By embracing different programs and therapy, Spencer found happiness and fulfillment that had eluded them for years, with Harmony Haus playing a significant role in this transformative process.

Spencer’s story is a testament to the power of recovery and the incredible impact that sobriety and helping others can have on one’s life.
